Overview

  • Heritage type:Forts
  • Language:English, Hindi, Marathi
Raigad Fort sits proudly on the Sahyadri hills in Maharashtra's Raigad district, near the town of Mahad. This fort served as the royal palace and capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's Maratha Empire. Built in 1670 by architect Hiroji Indulkar, it became famous during Shivaji Maharaj's coronation in 1674. Thousands gathered to witness the event with chants and cannon salutes filling the air. Rising 2700 feet high, the fort held grand halls, clever water tanks like Gangasagar Lake, and strong walls that protected the kingdom from enemies. Visitors today climb 1700 steps or take the ropeway to see the ruins of throne rooms, stables, and living quarters. In the rainy season, waterfalls flow down the cliffs, and the hills turn green. During winter, clear skies offer views of the Arabian Sea and distant villages. People come to honor Shivaji Maharaj at his samadhi, walk through the huge Maha Darwaja gate, and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Just 150 km from Mumbai, Raigad Fort welcomes history lovers and nature fans for a memorable visit full of respect for India's past.
